Some common items you see every day that are made with plastic zippers include jackets, backpacks, tents, and even luggage! They are lightweight, flexible, and durable, but like any mechanical part, they can sometimes hit a snag. Whether your zipper is stuck, the teeth don’t line up, or the slider is broken, you don’t always need to toss your jacket in the trash. With a little patience and a few tools, you can fix it yourself. Here’s an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to get your plastic zipper up and running again.
Before you attempt any repair, you have to know what the problem is. Some common problems include:
This occurs typically when something is caught in the teeth or the slider, or the zipper is sticking from wear or no lubricant. This is a vexing thing.
When the teeth on one side of the zipper are not in line with the teeth on the opposite side, the slider won’t be able to close the teeth completely. This could be wear and tear or accidental damage.
A broken zipper is typically evident by being unable to zip up or down at all. You may also notice it has come off one side of the zipper track.
To repair your plastic zipper, you will need a few simple tools:
How to fix a stuck zipper? If your zipper is stuck, start by looking for any visible debris or fabric caught in the teeth. If nothing appears to be obvious, consider lubricating the zipper with a bar of soap, candle wax, or just a bit of graphite powder. Rub the lubricant up and down the zipper’s teeth and slider to encourage smooth gliding.
With the lube evenly spread, wiggle the slider slightly up and down to loosen. Don’t try to force it, or you can make the zip even worse.
The issue with the zipper is that the zipper’s teeth might simply be misaligned, and the zipper won’t be able to close. If so, you can reposition the teeth with pliers.
Push the teeth gently back into place, ensuring that they are level and that they fit on both sides. If the slider is still in the on position, maneuver it until it’s able to grab the errant teeth correctly. If the teeth are too misaligned to resolve, it may be necessary to replace the entire zipper, but in the vast majority of cases, a good squeezing with a pair of pliers will do the trick.
If the slider is broken or won’t move, it will have to be replaced. Begin by taking out the old one. You need to gently remove the metal stopper at the top of the zipper, and then slide the old slider off the zipper track gently.
When you get the old slider out of the teeth, line the new slider up on the seam, ensuring it’s the correct orientation. Once the new slider is on, pinch the stopper at the top of the zipper back together with pliers.
To prevent future problems with your zipper, you can take proactive steps to maintain it. First, double-check that the zipper area is not overstuffed, as overstuffing can cause the teeth to misalign or the slider to break. Second, clean the zipper regularly to remove any dirt or lint that may be stuck in the teeth, allowing the zipper to operate smoothly. If the zipper feels hard to pull, you can lightly lubricate it to ensure it is functioning properly.
There is no need to fret when it comes to fixing a plastic zipper. Be it a stuck zipper, off-track teeth, or a broken slider, many common zipper problems can be fixed with a few tricks. With these simple steps, you can troubleshoot and get your zipper back on without spending extra money on a new one.
